Barack Obama delighted a group of gathered supporters not long ago with a snippet of the Al Green song Let’s Stay Together. Suffice it to say it made quite an impression on Al and Nigel Lythgoe.

The American Idol producer began to see the bigger picture and came up with a brilliant way to put the ratings through the roof.

The honcho hit Twitter to extend this invitation, “@BarackObama we loved your vocal performance so much we’d love to invite you on to #AmericanIdol this season for a duet with Al Green.”

We had some fun with the photo at the top of the page but Green was actually very honored to have Obama give the hit a whirl. We’re guessing he’d jump at the chance to team up with the leader of the free world.

The prez wouldn’t be the first high-ranking official to perform with a musical legend. When Condoleezza Rice was Secretary of State under the George W. Bush administration, the accomplished pianist performed with Yo-Yo Ma and Aretha Franklin.

We do have one question. Since we’re in the middle of another national election cycle, would Idol have to extend the same invite to Mitt and Newt? Heaven help us!
