The Top 5 American Idol contestants performed selections from the 60’s and a British pop song during Wednesday night’s show.
Serving as mentor this week was Steven Van Zandt of E Street Band fame. He and Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine had an interesting dynamic that may not have been a match made in heaven.
Last night there were twelve performances that included one by the guys and another by the girl trio:
The judges continue to be blown away by Joshua Ledit who recreated songs made famous by The Temptations and the Bee Gees. On a side note, his performance wardrobe has judge Randy Jackson practically salivating.
Making a strong showing was British-Texas teen Hollie Cavanagh. The judges wrote her off a while back but began to see a glimmer of hope last week. She made magic again last night with River Deep – Mountain High and Bleeding Love.
Randy Jackson suggested that Cavanagh “is peaking at just the right time.”
Country singer Skylar Laine had a good night but not her best. The judges continue to be impressed with her animated stage presence, particularly Steven Tyler who has been smitten with her from the beginning.
Jessica Sanchez, clearly a favorite of Jennifer Lopez, has a dynamic voice but her diminutive presence on stage may keep the 16-year-old out of the finals.
Last and perhaps headed home tonight is Phillip Phillips. He is clearly his own man and refuses to move away from the style where he feels most comfortable. His fans have stuck solidly behind him while the rest of us remain perplexed that he is still hanging on.
The judges offered up a few supportive comments last night but they appear to have lost their ability to gush about Phillip. Could this be the week that he gets the Idol boot?
