After 23 hours of deliberation over the course of three days a Hennepin County jury has reached a verdict in the Amy Senser criminal vehicular homicide case.
The wife of former Minnesota Vikings player Joe Senser was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Minneapolis on August 23, 2011.
The jury found her guilty on the felony count of fleeing the scene of an accident, guilty of failure to notify and not guilty of gross negligence. She was also found guilty on a misdemeanor count of careless driving. She could serve 48 months in jail and will be sentenced in July.
Amy Senser was driving a 2009 Mercedes Benz SUV that struck and killed Anousone Phanthavong, 38, as he was putting gas in his car after it ran out of fuel on a ramp leading from westbound Interstate 94 to Riverside Avenue at 11:00 p.m. on the night in question.
The mother of four was supposed to meet two of her daughters at the Xcel Energy Center to drive them home after a Katy Perry concert. She never showed up and the kids phoned their father to pick them up.
Amy Senser’s attorney initially advised the family to invoke their Fifth Amendment rights to remain silent in the days following the accident. She was not charged with a crime until ten days after the fatal accident. Minnesota citizens were outraged by what many characterized as preferential treatment.
