Against Me! singer and founder Tom Gabel has revealed that he is transgender and will soon start living life as a woman and change his name to Laura Jane Grace.
Gabel will soon begin the transformation by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gabel says that as a kid he felt disconnected from his body and has a condition called gender dysphoria. He is also considering sexual reassignment surgery.
The 31-year-old punk rocker is married and has a 2-year-old daughter. He and his wife Heather plan to remain married. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” says Gabel. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”
“I’m going to have embarrassing moments,” Gabel tells the magazine, “and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
