In the latest issue of TIME magazine the cover features a mother breastfeeding her almost 4-year-old son and is titled “Are You Mom Enough?” Suffice it to say the image isn’t sitting well with many people.

The story behind the cover is a nod to the 20th anniversary of the Dr. Bill Sears book on the subject of attachment parenting that the author believed “drove some mothers to the extremes.”

The woman on the cover is blogger Jamie Lynne Grumet with her strapping son Aram. She explained that she herself was nursed by her mother until she was 6-years-old because her UC Berkeley-trained nutritional scientist father thought it was imperative.

Photographer Martin Schoeller discussed the image, “When you think of breastfeeding, you think of mothers holding their children, which was impossible with some of these older kids. I liked the idea of having the kids standing, which serves to underline the point that is was an uncommon situation.”

Facebook and Twitter have been flooded with the fevered reactions of people who strongly object to the provocative display.
