The Westchester County Medical Examiner has confirmed that Mary Richardson Kennedy committed suicide by hanging herself. She was 52.
Robert F. Kennedy‘s ex-wife was found in the garage of her home in Mount Kisco, N.Y. on Wednesday afternoon by her housekeeper. The woman called Bedford police at 1:36 p.m. to report finding her deceased employer.
The preliminary coroner’s report indicates Mary Kennedy, an architect who had previously struggled with alcohol and drugs, died of asphyxiation.
The couple divorced two years ago after a 16 year marriage that produced four children ranging in age from 18 to 11.
A statement was released by the family: “We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her. Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation.”
