Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Curb Your Enthusiasm actress Cheryl Hines have been a couple since both left their respective spouses.
The son of slain politician Bobby Kennedy initiated divorce proceedings against Mary Richardson Kennedy in 2010, around the same time that Hines ended her own marriage to Paul Young.
Hines is currently starring as Dallas Royce on the ABC sitcom Suburgatory.
In a shocking turn of events, Mary Kennedy died earlier this week of asphyxiation due to hanging. A housekeeper found her lifeless body in the barn of her New York home. There was no suicide note.
Robert F. Kennedy traveled to the former family home to be with the couple’s four children who range in age from 11 to 17.
He said, “A lot of times I don’t know how she made it through the day. She was in a lot of agony for a lot of her life.”
RFK Jr. revealed to reporters that he had not lived with his wife during the four years leading up to the divorce filing, which had not yet been finalized at the time of her suicide.
Mary Kennedy struggled with alcohol and drug issues throughout her married life and was deeply distressed that RFK Jr. might take their children away from her when the divorce action hit the courts in July 2012.
Her biggest fear was that her estranged husband would bring up several 2010 arrests to prove she was an unfit mother. The charges included a DUI and some months later a charge of driving under the influence of prescription medication.
