Michael Phelps is the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. He won eight gold medals - eight! - at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, which followed a haul of six golds (and two bronzes) in 2004.

Phelps also broke seven world records during the Olympics in 2008.

The star athlete was born in Baltimore and attened the University of Michigan. He has two sisters and his parents divorced in 1984. He won the World Swimmer of the Year Award in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and, well, let's just say this is a lock for 2008, as well.

In early 2009, he made news for a different reason: Phelps was caught smoking marijuana and consequently dropped as spokesman for a couple of companies. We hope he's learned from this mistake.
