For a while there, it looked like Leah Messer and Jeremy Calvert would get back together .
The two of them made little effort to conceal their hookups while filming a Teen Mom 2 reunion special in New York, and it seemed that they both wanted something more than a “friends with benefits” situation.
But then, Leah suddenly slammed on the brakes.
These days, she and Jeremy seem to be keeping their distance from one another.
And this week’s episode of Teen Mom 2 provided us with some intriguing clues as to why that is.
Take a look:
Calling It Quits There was a time when it looked as though Leah Messer and Jeremy Calvert were preparing for another trip down the aisle. But then they abruptly decided to go their separate ways.
Island Time Messer and Calvert were so serious just a few months ago that she invited him to join her in Hawaii.
Consolation Prize Jeremy was unable to make the trip due to work obligations, but he invited Leah out to dinner when she got back to West Virginia.
What a Messer Leah was understandably bummed when Jeremy was forced to cancel their dinner date due to an emergency involving his grandfather. But we didn’t know just how bummed until this week.
A Little Background Leah and her sister Victoria have been enjoying some very eventful vacations lately, which is how Victoria wound up pregnant with her Costa Rican rafting guide’s baby.
Whoopsy The only problem is, Vicky was still married to her previous husband at the time she brought home the ultimate souvenir.
A Familiar Process Fortunately, Leah was willing to accompany Victoria to the courthouse to finalize her divorce on this week’s Teen Mom 2.
A Trip Down Memory Lane Unfortunately, Leah stole her sister’s thunder and took the opportunity to reflect on her two failed marriages and discuss her situation with Jeremy.
Triggered Leah is almost as thrilled as Victoria when the final papers are signed, but she admits the visit to the courthouse “triggered” memories of her own divorces.
Going There This led to some hard thinking and some difficult conversations regarding her relationship with Jeremy.
Pulling the Plug The episode captured the moment that Leah decided to call off her relationship with Jeremy, and she cited a surprising reason for doing so — her daughter Adalynn.
Mad Addie? Yes, it seems Leah is concerned that her youngest daughter might get the wrong idea, what with the way her dad is forever coming and going from her mom’s life.
Yeah, It’s a Bit Confusing Considering the grown-ups who watch Teen Mom 2 can’t figure out Leah and Jeremy’s relationship, we can see how a 6-year-old might be a little perplexed.
NOW She Thinks About It Of course, if Leah wanted to spare her daughters some confusion, she probably should have thought about that before she allowed them to read texts from Jeremy and confessed that she still has feelings for him.
The Verdict (Getty) On social media, the consensus seems to be that Leah is living up to her last name and handling this situation as messily as possible.
Comments From the Peanut Gallery (MTV) Some comments were supportive of Leah, a number of judgmental viewers encouraged her to stay single for a while for her own sake, and some arguments just made no sense at all. Like this one, for example:
Say What? “Don’t get back together with Jeremy because your other girls are feeling jealous that you like Jeremy and not their dad,” wrote one Instagram user. “Maybe later in the future but my opinion is that right now isn’t a good time. Your girl’s feelings are priority…”
Yeah, No … To be clear, Leah’s daughters shouldn’t have veto power over the men she dates. She just shouldn’t keep teasing them with the idea that she’s getting back together with Jeremy.
No Barriers During those times when she really feels like she and Jeremy have a future together, she probably wants her daughters to share in her excitement. That’s understandable.
Leave ‘Em Out Of It It’s a tough situation, to be sure. But we think everyone — including Leah — can agree that her kids have been way too involved in her on-again, off-again relationship with Jeremy.
