When most people post something to social media, it's for the amusement of a few hundred (or thousand, if you're really popular) friends and followers, and after an hour or so in the spotlight, it will be forgotten and dredged up each year by your Facebook memory generator.
But for celebrities, a single Instagram vote can generate millions of views, remain in viral circulation for weeks - and earn major bucks.
These days, advertisers are resorting to increasingly desperate measures in their never-ending effort to get eyes on their product logos, and often this means shelling out for a pop singer or reality star to hawk their wares on social media.
It's not hard to see why both parties like the arrangement.
Kylie Jenner has 50 million Instagram followers, which means that every day, more people see her posts than any show on television.
So that's why advertisers are so attracted to the 'Gram, but what do the celebs get out of it? Well, out-of-this world paychecks, for one thing.
Check out the list below, and you may find yourself feeling more forgiving the next time your favorite star posts a shameless piece of sponsored content:
With just over half a million followers, the Vanderpump Rules star can earn about $1,500 for a single IG post. Not bad for a restaurant hostess.
Meghan King Edmonds
The Real Housewives of Orange County star only has about 200,000 Instagram followers, but her popularity across other social media paltforms means that she can earn up to $2,000 a post, as long as it's shared on multiple sites.
It's not just millennials who are cashing in on social media. Actress and Beverly Hills Housewife Lisa Rinna reportedly pulls in $3,000 per social media post.
There's a reason Blac posts so many selfies. She can earn $2,000 per photo per week, and up to $3,500 for video posts.
Somehow, The Hills star Stephanie Pratt makes $7,000 a post off of her 680,000 Instagram followers. The Internet is a strange place.
No surprise here. The Lord pulls in between $15,000 and $20,000 per post. We guess a lot of people value his opinions on the best way to knock up a millionaire.
Estimates indicate that top models like Karlie and Miranda Kerr can pull in between $25,000 and $50,000 for a single endorsement post. No word on what kind of offers Karlie's bestie Taylor Swift gets, but Tay doesn't do many endorsements on social media, anyway. We're sure she's fine without them.
Cara has been to known to score upwards of $150,000 for a post. Who needs the runway when there's Instagram?
You knew this list was gonna be loaded with members of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, right? Sources say Kendall has made up to $300,000 "for a single post across her portfolio." No surprise there. She did have last year's most-liked pic.
Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian
Here's where things get confusing. Kim says she doesn't do social media endorsements, and all her posts are "authentic." (So all that waist-training is just for fun?!) Khloe and Kourtney are tight-lipped as to how much they make on IG, but sources have Khloe pulling in upwards of $500,000 for a single post.
All hail the queen. There's no official word on exaclty how much Kylie makes for a product placement selfie, but she's rumored to be the first to break the $1 million mark for an Instagram post. She may not have quite as many followers as Kim, but Kylie's cultishly devoted fans have made her a hit with advertisers.
