From its inception to its release, the Fifty Shades of Grey movie has encountered controversy at every turn, before, during and after the film’s debut.

But are the sequels really in serious jeopardy, as has been hinted this week?

A movie that straight up dominated the box office like Fifty Shades of Grey has is rarely the subject of so much turmoil, both internal and external.

Yes, the Fifty Shades of Grey reviews were bad. Check that. Beyond bad.

That’s far from a first for a commercial smash, however. So what’s going on with this one that would derail the seemingly sure-thing second and third films?

Well, there’s the clash between author E.L. James and … everyone.

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson is reportedly out of the next project, as James wants more creative control. Sam was quoted by Vanity Fair as saying:

“We battled all the way through. She’d say the same. There were tough times and revelatory times. Sparring contests. It was definitely not an easy process.”

As if the reported drama with James and Taylor-Johnson wasn’t enough, the scriptwriter, Kelly Marcel, has evidently bailed on the next film already.

Then there are rumors that star Jamie Dornan wants out as Christian Grey, because he hates Dakota Johnson and/or is getting a hard time from his wife.

“Jamie said the movie would skyrocket his career,” one tabloid reported this week, with sources saying his partner, Amelia Warner, is upset with the role.

“He tried to assure Amelia nothing would change but women all over the world now lust after Jamie … She hasn’t seen the film and I don’t think she will.”

His publicist shot that down, claiming that there is no sequel even planned yet (true, technically) and stating that “all press reports are pure conjecture.”

Dornan did say of the mixed response: “It divides opinion, the books divide opinion. A lot of slightly snobbier people have an opinion on it and without seeing it.”

Just the same, we highly doubt there won’t be a sequel, and when it gets the green light, that Dornan and Johnson and their lackluster chemistry won’t be back.

There’s simply too much money to be made, and with that comes obligatory conflict and rumors. But at the end of the day, it is all conjecture until proven otherwise.
