Sonya Thomas won the national championship at the Ninth Annual National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo, New York on Saturday. The 43-year-old pro-eater stands 5 feet and weighs 105 pounds.
The ‘Black Widow’ bested the competition, including her toughest competitor, Joey Chestnut, by downing 181 spicy fried chicken wings in 12 minutes. She managed to put away 4.86 lbs of poultry to set a new record. Chestnut came in a disappointing second after eating 169 chicken wings weighing 4.55 lbs.
Thomas consumed 4,583 calories, 198.7 grams of fat, and 1,824 mg of cholesterol. We suspect that the American Heart Association is shuddering in the aftermath.
The Korean born competitive eater held the previous record, set in 2005, when she ate 174 wings in 12 minutes. Joey Chestnut did beat out Thomas this year by winning the 2010 Nathan’s Hot Dog Competition. Sonya placed 4th.
