U.S. national figure skating champion and Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan is engaged to Clay Pell.

Her 30-year-old fiance is a JAG and Lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard and serves as the director for strategic planning on the National Security staff at the White House.

Kwan is also a public servant, having recently been appointed to the Council to Empower Women and Girls Through Sports by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Pell proposed the Kwan on Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island. He said, “We both knew where we were relationship-wise and where we were going.”

Her future husband is the grandson of the late Rhode Island Sen. Clairborne Pell, who established Pell Grants for college 40 years ago.
