Mel Gibson smashed his 2008 Maserati into a Malibu Canyon hillside on Sunday night according to the California Highway Patrol. The above vehicle photo is a screen capture from video taken of Gibson motoring in Malibu last night, prior to the crash.

The accident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. while he was southbound. Police indicate the 54-year-old actor and director was alone in the car when it veered off the roadway, causing considerable damage to the vehicle but not the driver.

Public Information Officer Leland Tang of the CHP provided the following information: “For unknown reasons, Mr. Gibson steered his car to the right and struck the rock hillside. He stopped his car at the scene and was contacted by officers from the West Valley CHP Area. Mr. Gibson supplied all the pertinent information to the officers at the scene, gave a statement, and received a ride home from a friend. His vehicle was towed from the scene.”

Gibson recently returned from a vacation in Fiji with two of his sons. The accident occurred 90 minutes after the actor ended a custody visit with his infant daughter Lucia. A nanny reportedly returned the 9-month-old to Mel’s estranged girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva at 7:00 p.m.

Mel’s rep Alan Nierob said: “He’s OK.”
