Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley was attacked by three men at a bar in Japan, where the Canadian rock band was performing for the Summer Sonic Festival on August 5. He suffered a slipped disc, a condition that has forced the cancellation of upcoming Warped Tour appearances.

Whibley is expected to make a full recovery, though he is currently in a great deal of back pain and undergoing physical therapy. He reportedly suffered a similar back injury in 2007.

Sum 41 issued a statement: “Knowing that they are unable to deliver their signature high energy show, Sum 41 made the tough decision that a break is needed while Deryck begins rehabilitation for the slipped disc.”

The band is frustrated with having to cancel but they are committed to standing by Whibley during his recovery. Bottom line is they don’t want to put on a half-a** show. They hope to be ready to pick things up with the London leg of the tour in late August.
