I have always been a fan of successful women in show business. This business isn’t easy for anyone, but women have it much harder. If our male counterparts are funny, we have to be too. When they are loud, we have to be louder or we are easily overshadowed. We must hold our ground, while trying not to be labeled a “b*tch.” We have to be attractive and sexy but not seem slutty. We have an entirely different set of rules and let me tell you, it ain’t easy!
I idolize Chelsea Handler because she completely changed the game. She made her own rules and in doing so, she has become a huge success. There is nothing typical about Ms. Handler.
I was so excited when I found out the Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang Tour was headed to the Twin Cities and knew I had to go. You can read the books, you can watch Chelsea Lately, but you’ve never truly seen Chelsea Handler until you’ve seen her live.
The Show: Everything about Chelsea Handler is inappropriate. She’s obnoxious, loud, rude, blunt, violent, vulgar and I swear if I didn’t love her so much, I’d absolutely hate her. When she walked onto the stage it was obvious she had consumed entirely too much alcohol, but the tour is being sponsored by Belvedere so it was almost expected…and I must admit that she functions very well while intoxicated.
You have to be very secure to watch her live. Nobody is spared, she jokes about Blacks, Asians, Whites, gays, women, men, Mormons, and Jews — if you do not have a good sense of humor you could very well walk away with your feelings hurt. I laughed a lot! I laughed even when i felt like I shouldn’t because of the inappropriate nature–it was hard not to.
The crowd was extremely receptive to her performance. That could be because she was extremely funny, or because they were intoxicated too. Either way, it worked for her and them. I think I like Chels because she says things and doesn’t care about the repercussions or who she offends. Most of us could never get away with that. Sure we could try to say whatever we want, but we could also lose our jobs or get punched in the face. Neither of those sound like fun options.
In case you were wondering, Chelsea’s right hand man Chuy was not in attendance. The comedian didn’t mention anything about her feud with Jesse James‘ mistress Michelle “Bombshell” McGee but she did make fun of her ex-boyfriend. The funniest part of her stand-up had absolutely nothing to do with the words that came out of her mouth. Her facial expressions and body language were priceless. It’s amazing how someone can be funny without even saying a word. Chelsea has clearly mastered that art.
Comedy aside, I don’t think Chelsea looks her age. She’s beautiful but she looks a lot older than 35. Maybe it’s all the alcohol she openly admits to drinking. Her body is phenomenal and she clearly has an A+ personality. I think I have a girl crush. Northrop Auditorium was a great venue and drunk Chelsea was a riot.
I’m Danni and everything about Chelsea Handler is unladylike…but it works for her!
