Country singer Chely Wright has a new book coming out this week. The memoir “Like Me: Confessions of a Hearthland Country Singer” will be released on Tuesday May 4 and we are told that the 288 page hardcover Random House offering will reveal that Wright is a lesbian.
Borders website describes the book: From an award-winning country singer and songwriter–comes a candid and inspiring glimpse into her extraordinary journey from high school homecoming queen to #1 “Billboard” artist, and an exploration of the toll that success has taken on her life.”
People snagged an exclusive interview which will appear on newsstands this week. She told the mag, “There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality. I wasn’t going to be the first.” But that has all changed. She admits, “Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out.”
The 39-year-old music artist received an ACM award for Top New Female Vocalist in 1995. She waited three years to get her first top twenty country hit with “Shut Up and Drive” and then scored a #1 hit with “Single White Female” in 1999.
Along with a book launch this week, Wright will also release her seventh studio album “Lifted Off the Ground” on Tuesday. The savvy move will allow her to do promo appearances for both in one fell swoop. With the lesbian revelation, it seems likely she will be much sought after on the talk show circuit. One of first television interviews will be Wednesday morning on The Today Show.
The country musician’s publicist is Howard Bragman, who assisted Chaz Bono with ‘story spin’ when she became a he.
