It was result night on the FOX hit reality show American Idol on Wednesday April 7 and the results were shocking. Ending up in the bottom three after the votes were tallied from Beatles week were Michael Lynche, Aaron Kelley and Andrew Garcia.

The nine contestants chose their music this week from the John Lennon and Paul McCartney songbook and Tuesday’s performances were significantly better than in previous weeks for several of the AI hopefuls. See photos and videos here.

We couldn’t help but notice that judge Simon Cowell was on his best behavior this week — providing positive feedback rather than engaging his usual tear-down tactic. He and host Ryan Seacrest ‘played nice’ this week too after some very odd and decidedly uncomfortable interactions in the weeks prior.

The remaining women in the group, Siobhan Magnus, Katie Stevens and Crystal Bowersox were the first to be told they were safe, followed by Tim Urban, Casey James and Lee DeWyze.

Of the bottom three, Garcia seemed the most likely to be sent home…except for the fact that host Seacrest announced at the beginning of the show that the contestant at the bottom of the pack was going to be a shocker. That said, the odd man out seemed likely to be Big Mike — and it was.

Because the ‘Judges Save’ was still in play, Lynche was given one last opportunity to convince Randy, Ellen, Kara and Simon to keep him around for another week. He sang “This Woman’s Work”, a tune he had performed to rave reviews earlier in the competition. The gamble paid off and all four judges voted to save him.

This turn of events was good for Big Mike but will mean that next week two contestants will be shown the door – with no opportunity to be saved. The remaining nine will be mentored by last season’s runner-up Adam Lambert.
