The remaining four contestants on the hit FOX reality show American Idol were mentored this week by multi-platinum R & B artist and actor Jamie Foxx. The Top 4 performed a solo song from the movies as well as a duet.
Lee DeWyze led things off with “Kiss From a Rose”. Randy said it was “nothing special”. Ellen wasn’t impressed either but she said “you’re so good”. Kara said “you are still great”, and Simon remarked that it was “verging on karaoke”.
Next up was Michael Lynche who sang “Will You Be There”. Randy, usually a Big Mike fan, said “I didn’t love this for you.” Ellen said it was “a little predictable”. Kara got “no goosebumps”, and Simon provided a positive spin with “at least you gave it 100%.”
Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze performed the duet “Falling Slowly”. Randy thought it was a great song and “could be a hit right now”. Ellen called them “the new Captain and Tennille”. Kara was extremely generous and called it “one of my favorite moments of the entire season”. Simon wrapped it with a bow, declaring it a “fantastic song”.
Casey James performed “Mrs. Robinson”. The judges were lackluster in their comments. Randy said he was “cool”. Ellen made fun of his little instrument and quipped, “maybe next time they’ll let you use a big boy guitar”. Kara called the song “a good choice”, and Simon used one of his favorite phrases, finding it “a bit lazy”.
Crystal Bowersox sang “I’m Alright”. Randy said “you are definitely an artist”. Ellen said “you took that song and made it better”. Simon said she was “back in the game” — though most would argue that she never left it.
The duo of Michael Lynche and Casey James performed “Have You Every Really Loved a Woman”. All of the judges agreed the the duets were far better than the solos on Tuesday night, with Simon suggesting the two duets were “a million times better”.
So which of the Top 4 will go home tonight? It will be between Casey and Big Mike. Lynche has been close to the chopping block a number of times and this just might be the end of the line for him….but you just never know.
