NBC is currently developing a three-hour television movie remake of the iconic 'The Sound of Music' and the starring role was handed to talented country singer Carrie Underwood.

Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment said, "Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp.  She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist."

The 1965 Oscar-winning film 'The Sound of Music' featured Julie Andrews.  She was awarded a Golden Globe and nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category.

During the 2007 CBS special Movies Rock, relative newbie Underwood got an opportunity to try out those famous lyrics that continue to move every generation to climb mountains of their own.

The made for TV movie will premiere sometime during the 2013 holiday season.
