CIA Director David Petraeus Resigns, Citing an Affair

cia director steps down citing affair

CIA Director David Petraeus submitted a letter of resignation to President Barack Obama during a meeting Thursday afternoon, after revealing details of an extramarital affair.    Both men have since issued statements to the press.

The retired U.S. Army four-star general, who turned 60 earlier this week, served as the top U.S. commander in Iraq and Afghanistan, and was sworn in as the head of the CIA in September 2011.

He has been married for 37 years to Holly Knowlton Petraeus, the daughter of an Army General.  She works in the Obama administration, for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.  They have two adult children.

Petraeus released this statement: "After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair.  Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.  This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation."

Shortly after the above statement was released to the press, the White House issued one of their own: "Petraeus provided an extraordinary service to the United States for decades.  By any measure, he was one of the outstanding General officers of his generation, helping our military adapt to new challenges."

"Going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work.  I wish them the very best at this difficult time."

It didn't take the media long to determine that the mistress in this saga is Paula Broadwell, who co-authored the biography profile All In: The Education of General David Petraeus.

Earlier this week the CIA began investigating whether she had access to the e-mail account used by David Petraeus ... a situation that would be a serious breach of security.  It was at that point that the CIA Director drafted his resignation letter to President Obama.

Broadwell is married to Scott Broadwell, a North Carolina radiologist.  They have two young sons.
