The New Year’s Eve countdown in Times Square drew an estimated crowd of one million revelers. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Salvatore A. Giunta pushed the lever at 11:59 p.m.
The iconic 11,875 pound crystal ball, powered by 32,256 LED lights, began its 70-foot drop as the throngs of people began the ceremonial shouted countdown that ended with the release of one ton of confetti.
