It has been an extremely dramatic week for former American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino. First rumors began circulating that she was having an affair with Antwaun Cook. That was followed by allegations that she made an explicit video with the married lover.
The final blow was a lawsuit filed by his wife Paula Cook, claiming that Barrino broke up the couple’s happy home.
The singer’s manager, Brian Dickens, admits that the turmoil of the last week took its toll: “She was overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention.”
Police received a 911 call Monday night at 10:13 p.m. Fantasia reportedly took a combination of aspirin and a sleep aid, after reading the lawsuit documents, and was rushed to the hospital. The police report classified Barrino’s hospitalization as a “suicide-overdose”.
Fantasia’s camp released a lengthy statement expressing her personal anguish: “Fantasia has always been an open book. Honesty, self-respect, and personal responsibility are values she wears proudly. “
The statement continued, “Fantasia believed Mr. Cook when he told her he was not happy in his marriage and his heart was not in it. She believed him when he told her he and Mrs. Cook separated in the late summer of 2009. She believed Mr. Cook when he told her he lived elsewhere. Fantasia is heartbroken and is sorry for any pain she may have caused.”
