Madonna Helps Free Jailed Gay Couple in Malawi (PHOTOS)
What Madonna wants, she gets! The Material Girl has a way of making things happen. Recently when Madge heard that a couple had been jailed in Malawi for being gay, she was outraged. Homosexuality is outlawed in the African country and is a jailable offense. Madonna quickly began protesting and urging others to follow suit.
Thousands of people joined in the singer's mission and the Malawian government could not ignore the uproar. The President of Malawi released the couple on "humanitarian" grounds. Activists are now trying to find them safe harbor.
After hearing the news of the release, Madonna took to her blog: "I have always believed love conquers all—yesterday I got to see it in action. In the last week over 30,000 of you added your name to mine calling for the release of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalangal—the Malawi couple sentenced to 14 years hard labor for the "crime" of homosexuality."
She continued, "With incredible joy, I am writing to share with you that Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has ordered their release. Though they are free from prison, sadly their safety and future in Malawi is still unknown. I hope this is just the beginning of our work together."
Madonna has close ties to the region. She adopted two of her children from Malawi, has established a charity to provide aid, and is building a school for girls there. Job well done Madonna!
