Nicole Richie and Joel Madden celebrated the opening of a new community playground Tuesday in South Los Angeles.

Richie and Madden’s two-year-old daughter Harlow also attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playground built at downtown L.A.’s low income housing, Beyond Shelter, with funds raised by her parents.

“When we first started coming here, there were no kids outside,” Richie told People magazine. “To see the place come to life and have a place to come outside and be kids, and have their imaginations run wild, it’s really awesome.”

In September 2008, Richie and Madden pledged to raise $35,000 through the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation to build the playground that will serve hundreds of low-income children.

The couple, along with Joel’s twin brother Benji, announced a partnership with 7-11’s Coffee Cup With a Cause, in which the proceeds from coffee cups – designed by Richie – will be donated to the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation, with a guaranteed minimum donation of $250,000 by March 15.
