Kendra Caldwell and Joseph Duggar were featured this week in a new TLC special.
This program was comprised of two 10-minute videos that were meant to chronicle the conclusion of this couple's pregnancy journey, which culminated on November 2 with the arrival a girl named Addison Rose.
However, instead of watching these reality stars go through the final stages of pre-parenthood and simply reacting with joy...
... viewers were left with a pretty major question on Monday night after taking note of one seemingly dangerous Kendra made right before giving birth.
Prior to heading off to the hospital for delivery, Kendra went right ahead and drank castor oil in order to speed up her labor.
Yes, you read that correctly and, if you tuned in for the special, you even witnessed it:
Kendra drank castor oil.
“I think we’re going to head to the hospital tonight because contractions have gotten around four minutes apart,” Kendra shared in the online episode.
“So we did some castor oil, and it’s - it seems to be working. I would say we’re definitely in labor. It’s not transition, but it’s definitely labor.”
For those unaware, here's some background on the use of this item:
A bunch of studies suggest that castor oil really can induce contractions -- but it can also be quite dangerous at worst and very unpleasantat best.
According to The New York Times, this type of oil can cause nausea and it has a laxative effect.
Healthline has added the contractions it causes can be irregular and painful, placing undue stress on both mother and baby.
Because of the aforementioned laxative effect of castor oil, it can cause babies to pass meconium before birth, which can lead to Meconium Aspiration Syndrome.
In other words:
The risks certainly seem to outweight the rewards here.
For the member of a family that believes in natural birth, it seems wild and inappropriate to use something so unnatural simply to prompt delivery... something that is going to happen in its due course anyway.
Kendra has not commented on this controversy, but she and Joe did speak to Us Weekly two weeks ago about their precious addition.
“We’ve quickly adjusted to being a family of four,” the couple told this tabloid on Monday, November 18, adding of what things are like for them and their loved ones these days:
“Our new pastime is staring and smiling at this precious new face! Garrett is very interested in his new sister.
"We may be a little tired but what we lack on sleep has been made up in happiness!”
Kendra previously told followers that her second little one arrived at 7 pounds and 12.5 ounces, measuring 20.5 inches long.
She and Joe said the following shortly after their daughter entered the universe:
Addison Renee has made us a family of four and we are already so in love with her! She made a quick arrival in the early hours of the morning and has already melted our hearts.
We know Garrett is going to be a great big brother.
Children are each a special gift from God and we are so happy our newest blessing is here.
