Unexpected (and rather suspicious) news out of London today, as The Sun is reporting that Meghan Markle will no longer be permitted to wear jewelry from the royal collection that had previously belonged to Princess Diana.
Interestingly, the report indicates that the ban applies only to Meghan -- and Kate Middleton is still allowed to wear Lady Di's jewels.
Now, The Sun's royal coverage is infamous for its inaccuracies and flat-out BS, but this piece comes to us courtesy of Dan Wootten, who actually has a pretty good record with this sort of thing.
Which means one of two things is likely true here:
Either the Queen really did ban Meghan from wearing Diana's jewels as some sort of laughably petty punishment.
Or Wootten's source is a mouthpiece for the Cambridges, and the feud between Meghan and Kate is very much alive and well.
“This is a surprising situation that has been going on behind the scenes over the past few months and has caused tension and upset, especially for Harry," says the insider.
"It is at the discretion of the Queen and trusted advisers which items in the Royal Collection she chooses to loan out and to whom," the source adds.
"Aspects of Meghan’s behaviour, including before the Royal Wedding, caused resentment with forces within Buckingham Palace."
The news comes on the heels of a report that the royals are upset about Meghan's baby shower in New York, and the Duchess of Sussex was "made aware" this week that such events are beneath her station.
But were they really so pissed that they felt the need to publicly shame her?
Well, according to the insider, the shower was just the latest in a long line of missteps for Markle.
“To be perfectly honest, the Queen herself was not impressed with some of Meghan’s demands, especially as a new member of the family," the source claims.
"As a result, Buckingham Palace has decided that not all items from the Queen’s royal collection will be opened up to Meghan.
"As part of that situation, the Queen informed Prince William that the items from the Royal Collection worn by Princess Diana would not immediately be made available to Meghan.”
Yes, the informant seems to be suggesting that William was burdened -- or blessed, depending on how serious this feud is -- with the duty of informing Meghan that his mother's jewels were officially off limits.
And apparently, the primary motivation behind this bizarre move was to remind Meghan of her place within the family:
“The Queen likes Meghan personally but this is about the hierarchy. She is showing that maintaining the correct order and precedence within the family is important," says the source.
"Even if Meghan is the most popular woman in the world, she is of a lower rank than Kate.”
According to Wootten, a different insider has now confirmed that the Queen indeed issued a royal decree with the goal of reminding Meghan she's still the low duchess on the totem pole:
“It is true that Buckingham Palace did not want all the items in the Royal Collection to be opened up to Meghan at this time," says the second source.
"Obviously Kate as the next Princess of Wales and a senior member of the family does have them made available to her," the insider adds.
"That’s not to say items won’t be loaned to Meghan in the future if situations change.”
It's hard to know what to make of all this, but we remain firm in our stance that this is a case of either petty intra-family bickering run amok or another ugly smear campaign.
Whatever the case, it seems that Meghan is being semi-publicly discriminated against just days before she gives birth, and tensions within the royal family are running higher than anyone could have previously imagined.
