On Wednesday, we learned that Britney Spears had checked herself in to a mental health facility.
This was a smart, courageous move, brought on by her deeply felt concern over her father's recent health crisis.
Now, we're learning more about what led Britney -- and Britney alone -- to make this brave decision.
Entertainment Tonight spoke to multiple sources about Britney's choice.
"She seems to be on a constant roller coaster," an insider characterizes. "And can't get off."
The source notes that this has now changed, saying: "She is finally getting the help she needs."
"She is the one who finally decided she needed help," the insider affirms.
"And," the source details. "Made the decision to manage her own emotions,"
Her father, Jamie Spears, was hospitalized for 28 days earlier this year.
Britney canceled her Dominion show as a result -- but by late March, had come to realize that this is not enough.
"She finally realized it was affecting her everyday life," the insider confides. "And even her relationships."
"She wants to feel better," the source says. "And more relaxed."
"And," the insider adds. "Taking time to focus on herself truly is her only option."
"It has been a rough year," the source acknowledges.
It's barely April, and TMZ reports that Britney checked herself in last week -- in March.
"While those closest to her have encouraged her to get help," the insider says.
The source continues: "she finally decided on her own it was time."
Britney is a strong person and she keeps her priorities in order. That means that she knows how much mental health matters.
Britney has reportedly been all but consumed by worry about her ailing father.
As a result, she has been "isolating" herself, according to the report.
But she hasn't iced out everyone in her life.
Britney is many things, but she is first and foremost an amazing mother.
She has been sure to remain present in the lives of her sons, 13-year-old Sean Preston and 12-year-old Jayden
"Her father's illness has frightened her," the insider says.
The source explains: "He has always been her savior and her support system."
"And," the insider laments. "It doesn't seem that he is getting better."
"She has always trusted her father in every way," the source characterizes.
"And," the insider shares. "Is finding it difficult to deal with the possibility of losing him."
Britney has been in a relationship with hunky boyfriend Sam Asghari for years, now.
That romance has reportedly suffered during her recent worries.
"She hasn't felt emotionally available for the relationship," the source explains.
That is certainly not her fault.
"She has been white-knuckling this time," the insider adds. "Just trying to hold it together."
On Wednesday, what must have been either a scheduled post or a prearranged post with her social media manager went up on Britney's Instagram.
"We all need to take time for a little 'me time.' :)" Britney's caption reads.
Her boyfriend, Sam Asghari, made a similarly succinct Instagram post, praising Britney's decision.
"It isn’t weakness, It’s a sign of absolute strength," Sam affirms. "People should only be inspired by this, at least I am."
Little sister Jamie Lynn Spears shared an old, old throwback photo, praising her big sister without directly addressing her current situation.
"She rode the bus home with me after my first day of school," Jamie Lynn shares. "Cuz she’s the fn best."
Kevin Federline gave a statement to Entertainment Tonight through his attorney, Mark Vincent.
"Kevin commends Britney for recognizing that she needs to take a step back," Vincent says.
"And," the statement continues. "That she is taking the reasonable steps to dealing with her situation in a responsible way."
"He wishes everyone well," Vincent concludes.
We, too, wish Britney Spears and her entire family the very best and applaud her courage.
