It’s been almost a decade since 16 and Pregnant debuted to harsh criticism and stellar ratings.
In the years since, the show has taken on a life of its own, making stars of its original cast members and spawning numerous spinoffs.
There have been a lot of surprises along the way — who would have thought the ladies of Teen Mom 2 would prove to be a bigger hit than the OGs? — but the biggest surprise of all is how popular the franchise remains.
So take a trip down Teen Mom memory lane with this rundown of every spinoff launched by 16 and Pregnant .
It’s quite a list:
16 and Pregnant (Getty) It all started with 16 and Pregnant, which made its debut on MTV way back in June of 2009.
Moving Up to the Majors Unfortunately, most of the girls featured on 16 and Pregnant did not go on to Teen Mom fame. Some were never re-cast, while others — such as Mackenzie McKee — starred on spinoffs that didn’t last.
Cause For Optimism? The casting of Briana DeJesus on Teen Mom 2 offered some hope to former 16 and Pregnant stars, and no doubt many were optimistic that they too would get the call from MTV.
Hopes Dashed (Getty) Unfortunately, the last time producers had a vacancy to fill, they went outside the franchise, adding Bristol Palin and Cheyenne Floyd.
Teen Mom OG Of course, many fans of the franchise were upset by the fact that Bristol and Cheyenne did not meet the core criteria of the show in that they were not “original girls” featured in the first season of 16 and Pregnant.
OG OGs Amber Portwood, Farrah Abraham, Maci Bookout, and Catelynn Lowell were the first stars of the show that started out as Teen Mom and became Teen Mom OG.
Personnel Changes (Getty) Farrah was fired in late 2017 and replaced with Bristol and Cheyenne.
Big Shoes to Fill (MTV) Unfortunately, Cheyenne and Bristol combined couldn’t generate as much drama as Farrah, and the show’s ratings have been on the decline ever since.
Signs of Age (E!) As the ratings slide continued during the show’s eighth season, there were concerns about whether or not the series would be renewed.
The Farrah Factor (MTV) While the show has been renewed for a ninth season, insiders believe this will be TMOG’s final go-round. We guess Farrah had the last laugh on this one!
Teen Mom 2 (Getty) Part of the problem with TMOG’s ratings is that the show can’t compete with Teen Mom 2 in that department.
Spinoff Queens Jenelle Evans, Kailyn Lowry, Chelsea Houska, and Leah Messer are the ladies that helped to make Teen Mom 2 an overnight hit.
Better Late Than Never Briana DeJesus was cast on the show in 2017, and while the decision was initially controversial, fans have warmed up to the former Teen Mom 3 star.
Balancing Act But these days, the show has a Farrah-esque problem that could create major issues going forward. The name of that problem is Jenelle Evans.
Next to Go? Jenelle’s husband, David Eason, has already been fired from the show, and many believe Jenelle should be next to follow due to allegations of abuse and bigotry.
Playing With Fire But if Jenelle goes, will the ratings follow? Something tells us we’ll find out soon enough,.
Teen Mom 3 (Getty) Then there’s Teen Mom 3, which proved to MTV that you can always have too much of a good thing.
Easy Come, Easy Go (Getty) The show lasted for just one season in 2013. Of the cast members, only Briana went on to further fame within the franchise.
Teen Mom U.K. In 2016, British broadcasters began producing their own version of the stateside smash. Though its first season was broadcast in the US, Teen Mom UK has yet to make much of a splash on this side of the pond.
Teen Mom Poland That same year, Poland debuted its own version of the show. The language barrier has prevented it from debuting stateside.
Teen Mom New Jersey (MTV) Of course, both foreign versions have fared better than Teen Mom New Jersey, which was canceled before a single episode aired due to a lack of interest on social media.
Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant Cast And then there’s Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant, which made its debut on MTV last year.
Strong Start Despite its redundant title, the show managed to attract an audience in its first season. Will it go on to be as some of its predecessors? Only time will tell.
