USA Network made an announcement on Wednesday that may have implications across the Atlantic Ocean:
Suits has been renewed for a ninth - and FINAL - season.
This concluding run will consist of 10 episodes, meaning the long-running legal drama will come to an end some time in 2020.
“Suits has played an instrumental role in our network’s DNA for nearly a decade,” said Chris McCumber, president, USA Network and SYFY, adding:
“I and everyone at USA Network sincerely thank [creator] Aaron Korsh, our partners at UCP and the entire Suits family for their tremendous creativity, devotion and support over a truly amazing run.”
Suits, of course, was a surprising hit for USA long before Meghan Markle starting dating Prince Harry.
But the series exploded in popularity and name recognition once this romance took off.
Now, with the show preparing to wrap up, one natural question remains:
COULD MARKLE MAKE A RETURN?!?
Many programs bring back former characters for a series finale or one last storyline in the wake of a farewell.
Because Markle's Rachel simply went off and got married to end Season 7, meaning she's very much alive in the Suits Universe, it would not be unrealistic for her to stop by one more time.
Not from the show's point of view, at least.
And Markle would probably welcome a break from a life she allegedly hates, right?
"As of this minute, I don’t know which of our old original cast will be back and which won’t because we’re so early in the season," Korsh told Deadline this week.
He then responded to a weird rumor going around that he donated millions of dollars to one of Markle's favorite charities in some kind of quid pro quo for her to return as Rachel.
"I can tell you that those things in the papers [about making a charitable donation to get Markle on board], I have no idea what they’re talking about," he added in this interview, emphasizing further:
"I have not arranged for millions of dollars to be donated to anything on behalf of anyone so that I can tell you.
"But as far as the original people coming back ... we’re so early in the season that we haven’t formulated what we want to do, so we can’t reach out to people before we know what we want to do."
Indeed, Suits Season 8 Episode 11 (the winter premiere) only just aired last night.
We'd love for Markle to make another appearance as Rachel on Suits, but let's face it:
There's a better chance of a Queen Elizabeth sex tape leaking than this happening.
There's a better chance of Kate Middleton filing for divorce from Prince William.
There's a better chance of you (yes, any of you loyal readers) stopping by Season 9 than of Markle doing so.
Already under constant fire for defying the monarchy left and right, do you really think the Duchess of Sussex would take the unprecedented step of acting for American television while actually being a Royal?
Or that she'd be permitted to do so?
Sorry, folks. This ain't happening.
