As you've likely heard by now, Ben Affleck checked into rehab earlier this week as a result of his ongoing struggle with alcoholism.
The decision to seek further treatment was prompted by an intervention coordinated by Affleck's estranged wife, Jennifer Garner.
Garner and Affleck effectively ended their marriage two years ago (though they have yet to finalize their divorce), but they still have three kids together, so it stands to reason that she would remain concerned for her ex's health.
Ben's most recent ex, Lindsay Shookus, has no such ties to the actor, so it's equally unsurprising that she decided to bail when his problematic drinking started to become a source of constant strife.
While it was originally reported that Affleck dumped Shookus for Playboy model Shauna Sexton, sources now say Lindsay was actually the one to pull the plug on the relationship.
And her decision was reportedly spurred by Ben's reckless boozing.
“The notion that Ben was taking steps to be healthier and sober prior to this intervention isn’t all true,” a source tells Us Weekly.
“Ben hasn’t been sober or been that present for his family and relationship with Lindsay, and now everyone knows the reason why," the insider adds.
"He was suffering, and his addiction undoubtedly took over.”
The source goes on to claim that as a mother and successful career woman, Lindsay simply couldn't afford any further association with Ben and his increasingly problematic behavior.
“Lindsay does not want to be involved in the media circus that follows Ben — especially in this difficult time,” the source tells Us.
“She is a private person and has taken the necessary steps to avoid the hurtful and often unwelcome attention.”
Of course, the fact that Affleck has a reputation for becoming belligerent and destructive while drunk probably didn't help the situation.
“When Ben drinks, he gets nasty and it’s hard to be around him,” a source tells Radar Onlne.
“His behavior was a big turn off to Lindsay, who prides herself on her work and her motivation for life," the insider adds.
Of course, reps for Ben are countering these claims and insisting that Affleck and Shookus amicably decided to go their separate ways.
“They tried really hard to make it work, but distance combined with work obligations and other factors made it something that could not work at this time," claims one source.
Yes, Ben may be keeping a low profile in treatment, but his PR team is still working around the clock to protect his reputation.
