Leah Messer has one of the worst hard luck stories that the Teen Mom franchise has ever told, and that's really saying something.
One of the show's most harrowing storylines revolves around Leah's daughter, Ali Simms, and her struggle with muscular dystrophy.
It's a story that sadly never ends for Messer - and may even be getting sadder still, as last week's episode of Teen Mom 2 suggested.
On the most recent installment, Leah was brought to tears by the possibility that the disease might rob her daughter of her ability to walk.
Now, in a preview for this week's coming episode, Leah reveals that she's afraid Ali's twin, Aleeah Grace, may also suffer the same fate.
Does she also have the debilitating genetic condition? Leah says:
"They actually want to get Gracie tested for MD as well."
It might seem that Leah would already know if Aleeah is afflicted with the same condition as her sister, but the disease can take many forms.
Also, symptoms sometimes don't manifest until later in life.
Despite the potentially frightening implications of this revelation, Aleeah is apparently unafraid, as seen in the clip above.
"She's excited that she actually gets to go to Columbus with us this time," Leah said, because children are so innocent.
"I mean, the possibility of her even having it is worrisome to me."
Given that the episode was filmed several months ago and Leah has made no mention of Aleeah suffering from the illness?
We're guessing she's probably in the clear, and that we'll soon find out the little one is not at a heightened level of risk.
A little good news is no doubt welcome in the Messer household, as Leah has seen scarce amounts of it in recent years.
The 24-year-old only recently regained custody of her twins from her first husband, Corey Simms, after losing it due to ... well ...
What the court calls irresponsible parenting practices.
Messer is in the process of rebuilding her life after struggling with addiction and unspecified "emotional issues" that have plagued her.
Given that, and after two divorces, learning that her other eldest daughter is also suffering from MD would be a tremendous blow.
Fortunately, there's reason to be optimistic, and while the episode will no doubt be fraught with tension, we aren't assuming the worst.
Rather, we're confident that while there are considerable obstacles ahead for them, things will work out in the Messer family's favor.
At least we certainly hope so.
Leah's daughters have captured viewers' hearts from the beginning on MTV, and seeing them suffer another setback would be devastating.
Despite the flak that Leah has taken for some of her more questionable parenting practices over the years, most fans are firmly in her corner.
How can you not pull for her?
Even during her darkest times, the West Virginia native has been relatable and sympathetic, as she wears her heart on her sleeve.
Moreover, she really tries her best to make a difficult situation work, and has made tremendous strides in the last 18 months or so.
Now, the reality show that made her famous has always trafficked in drama - something she and her ex Jeremy can agree on.
Both have criticized the show and its producers publicly for skewing the timeline of events or otherwise altering them to stir up controversy.
Rarely have the stakes been so high as this, though, and we'll be very interested to see if there are similar allegations made by Leah.
Here's hoping for the best for Leah and her kids. That's the long and short of it. If this ends well, everyone will breathe a sigh of relief.
As always, you can watch Teen Mom 2 online to get caught up before what's sure to be a highly emotional installment.
