Nick Gordon has been found "legally responsible" for the late Bobbi Kristina Brown’s death after he failed to appear in court on Friday.
This brings an unexpected, anticlimactic but widely believed to be justified end to a sad saga that has played out for nearly two years.
It confirms what many have long maintained, despite a lack of clarity over the exact specifics of what played out that tragic day in Georgia:
Nick Gordon killed Bobbi Kristina Brown.
A spokesperson for Atlanta’s Fulton County Court has confirmed in a statement that Nick's no-show was followed by the judge's ruling:
“Fulton County Superior Court Judge T. Jackson Bedford ruled today that Nick Gordon is legally responsible for Bobbi Kristina Brown’s death."
"After the defendant failed to appear in court,” the statement reads, the judge struck down his claims of innocence and entered a judgment.
The next step will be to establish damages, and “a jury will determine the amount of damages to be awarded to Brown’s conservator."
The daughter of Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in a bathtub at her Georgia home in January 2015.
Circumstances eerily similar, and tragic, to Houston's 2012 death, and the mystery surrounding Nick, made international headlines for months.
Following a six-month medically induced coma, Bobbi Kristina Brown died at the age of 22 after eventually succumbing in July 2015.
Just one month later, her estate filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against Gordon, Bobbi's controversial longtime live-in partner.
The lawsuit filed by Bobbi Kristina’s conservator, Bedelia Hargrove, alleges that “Ms. Brown died due to a violent altercation with Gordon."
According to the estate, Gordon placed her in a bathtub, unconscious, after he attacked her and injected her with a toxic mixture of chemicals.
Gordon, who has vehemently denied the claims, despite exploiting Bobbi Kristina's death seemingly at every turn, has not been charged criminally.
However, a judge may (and did) rule against him by virtue of simply not showing up if the court feels the case against him is that strong.
An attorney for Bobbi Kristina’s estate told Atlanta NBC affiliate 11Alive that the family is satisfied with Friday’s court ruling.
Albeit by default, a win is a win as they say.
“In court today, we finally finished a long journey for justice for Bobbi Kristina Brown,” the lawyer told the local news outlet.
By virtue of formally "striking Mr. Gordon’s answer, [the court agrees with us] that he is legally responsible for her death."
So what comes next for both sides?
"The only thing left to prove is the value of her life," the attorney said, referring to damages, and soon enough, "we intend to do that."
Don't expect them to go easy on Nick.
Hours after the ruling, Bobbi Kristina’s aunt Leolah Brown spoke to the same station about finally finding justice for her niece.
"It’s been a long time. They should have been gotten him. He should have been arrested," she said of Gordon. "He's ignorant; he's arrogant."
"He thinks he's above the law," she said. "He's not."
UPDATE: A statement from Bobby Brown reads:
"I am pleased with the outcome of today's court proceedings. All I ever wanted was answers relating to who and what caused my daughter's death"
"Today's judgment tells me it was Nick Gordon. Now I need to process all the emotions I have and lean on God to get me and my family through this."
