It's been a long time since the Duggar family expanded their enormous Arkansas brood, but it looks like that's very much what's happening.
Last year, TLC canceled 19 Kids & Counting in the wake of the Josh Duggar sex scandals, which hit the Internet almost back to back.
Before Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar could make them change the title to 20 & Counting, as they did from 17 to 18 and 18 to 19, it was toast.
The Duggars brand would soon return a new title, Counting On, and a shift in focus to the adult lives of Jinger, Jill and Jessa Duggar.
Meanwhile, the implicit expectation was that Jim Bob and Michelle were fully in grandparent mode and no longer trying for kids of their own.
After all, she's pushing 50, and after miscarrying and having gone through so much with their last baby, Josie, Michelle had to be done.
Right? Not so fast!
Sort of. We'll explain:
According to Gossip Cop, the couple is taking custody of their great-nephew, who is eight years old, so they are adding a new child.
In a manner of speaking.
The boy is the son of the Duggars’ niece, Rachel Hutchins, who is currently unable to care for him due to a series of upsetting factors.
She has reportedly struggled with a number of financial and legal issues in recent years, and finds herself homeless as well as unemployed.
It's a terrible situation, to say the least; Hutchins previously relinquished guardianship of her kid to her mother, who is Michelle’s sister.
(Not Evelyn Ruark.)
Michelle's sister suffered a stroke this summer, leaving the boy without a guardian once again, so Duggar family has taken the child in.
Wonderful of them, honestly.
Currently, they have temporary custody, but they intend to go to court in November to make their guardianship status of the boy permanent.
Hutchins, 23 and on probation, approves of the plan.
At that point, they will begin the adoption process to legally bring him into the family, which is a separate, but vitally important, step.
The boy's mother is also expected to sign off on this.
This will be the first adopted child for the Duggars, and once it is legal, they will indeed have 20 Kids & Counting, however unexpectedly!
He will be the first of 20 we rarely see, though.
The boy is not expected to join the famous family on TV, and sources say he will primarily be kept out of the spotlight going forward.
Perhaps that's for the best, all things considered.
While fans of Jessa, Jinger, Jill and Joy, among other Duggars, have received the family's TV comeback with open arms, scars remain.
Specifically, regarding Josh and his parents.
The family's first-born has been persona non grata, and based on the past few weeks, the patriarch and matriarch may want to take notice.
Recently, a Jim Bob and Michelle cameo on Counting On was not well received by fans, and again last night, he made more headlines.
If it's not one thing, it's another with them.
Whatever you think of Jim Bob and Michelle, though, there's no getting around the fact that they're doing an amazing thing right here.
We may not say this often enough, but:
Kudos to the Duggars!
