As you've likely heard by, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt this morning after two years of marriage and more than a decade together as a couple.
Little is known about the reasons behind Jolie's move, and both parties are keeping mum with regard to the causes of their split.
It may be quite some time before either Pitt or Jolie speaks candidly about the end of their marriage, but moments ago, Pitt's team issued a statement to the press in which the actor both confirms the split and requests privacy:
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids,” reads the statement, first published by People magazine.
“I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Pretty boilerplate stuff, but given how secretive Pitt and Jolie have been throughout their relationship, no one expected much more at this early stage in the divorce process.
Most of what we know thus far has come from sources who spoke with TMZ and claimed that it was Pitt's drug use and "anger problem" that led Jolie to file papers.
A different insider reportedly spoke with People moments ago and revealed that "the divorce is a complete shock” to Pitt.
The source added:
“They have definitely spent more time apart this year, but it’s still a shock. They just celebrated their wedding anniversary together.”
All other reliable information comes from the the documents filed by Jolie today, which indicate that the couple has been separated since September 15 and that Jolie filed Hollywood's best-known divorce attorney, Laura Wasser.
There have been rumors about Pitt's involvement with co-star Marion Cotillard, but TMZ has definitively refuted those reports, saying that it was the actor's behavior at home, not his alleged infidelity that led Jolie to call it quits.
For her part, Jolie has yet to speak out on the divorce.
If she does issue any sort of statement today, it probably won't be any more revelatory that Pitt's.
As this one of the biggest and most unexpected celebrity splits in recent years, however, you can bet that despite Pitt's pleas for privacy, the tabloid press will keep right on digging.
Hopefully, they'll honor his request to leave the kids out of it.
We'll have further updates on this story as more information becomes available.
