Prince, one of the most iconic and beloved artists in modern music history, was found dead on Thursday morning at his home in Minnesota.
He was 57 years old.
The shocking, tragic passing took place a few days after Prince was hospitalized for flu-like symptoms last week.
The medical situation was not believed to have been overly serious at the time, although the plane on which Prince was flying did have to make an emergency landing.
The following day, however, Prince performed on stage. He assured fans he was okay, and by all accounts appeared to be.
While there is some speculation that Prince somehow knew his death was coming, very little has been confirmed at this time.
We stress again that information is sparse and still coming in.
This is what we know so far about the star's death:
Authorities responded to the singer's Paisley Park mansion around 9:45 a.m. today and found the singer's body at the on-site recording studio.
The Carver County Sheriff’s Department initially did not publicly identify the singer as the victim because they wanted to first notify his next of kin.
Prince broke out as an international superstar in 1982 after his smash hit album 1999. He earned seven Grammy Awards over the course of his career.
Hit songs by the enigmatic artist - who once changed his name to an unpronouncable symbol as part of a business dispute - are too numerous to list.
From the "1999" title track to "When Doves Cry," and "Raspberry Beret" to "Little Red Corvette," he remains a radio staple to this day.
He also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for "Purple Rain" - a movie he wrote, produced, starred in and performed all the music for - in 1985.
In 2004, Prince wasn’t just inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame … he performed a classic version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" to close out the ceremony.
The Purple One sold over 100 million records over his lifetime, and remained a cultural icon, performing at halftime of the Super Bowl in 2007.
Expect plenty of tributes and reaction to pour forth from Hollywood and the rest of the world throughout the rest of the day and the week.
We'll update The Hollywood Gossip with more information and developments as news breaks regarding this stunning celebrity death.
For now, we send a "Kiss" up to heaven and we also send our condolences to Prince's friends, family members and loved ones.
UPDATE: A spokesman for Prince has released the following statement:
“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57."
"There are no further details as to the cause of death at this time.”
