The Supreme Court has legalized gay marriage in all 50 states.
In a landmark 5-4 opinion, the justices ruled Friday that states cannot ban same-sex marriage, establishing a brand new civil right and delivering LGBT advocates a truly historic victory.
The ruling featured Justice Anthony Kennedy writing for the majority, along with the four liberal justices.
Each of the four conservative judges, meanwhile, wrote their own dissent, with Justice Scalia penning an especially angry opinion.
"The substance of today's decree is not of immense personal importance to me," Scalia said. "But what really astounds is the hubris reflected in today's judicial Putsch."
He also slammed the Court's verdict as a "threat to American democracy."
On the other side, Kennedy wrote:
"No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were...
"The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them."
