Considering Transformers: Age of Extinction grossed over one billion dollars worldwide, the following piece of movie news was inevitable.

But it still makes us sad.

Transformers 5 is officially a go.

During a Hasbro earnings conference call on April 20, CEO Brian Goldner confirmed that the next Transformers film is expected in theaters in 2017:

"We have in fact brought in Akiva Goldsman to lead a group of writers to really create a strategic plan around Transformers," he announced.

"We think there are any number of stories to be told from the brand that has been around for 30 years with amazing canon and mythology. We would expect the sequel to the Transformers movie to happen in 2017."

The first three Transformers movies starred Shia LaBeouf, while the last installment featured Mark Wahlberg in the lead role.

Wahlberg is signed on for additional sequels and has expressed an eagerness to get back to work. It seems pretty likely he'll be leading the Transformers 5 cast.

“I can’t speak for [Director Michael Bay], but something tells me we’ll be on the set soon,” Wahlberg recently told MTV.
