Simon Cowell has spoken out once again on Zayn Malik leaving One Direction.
After telling reporters last week that Malik has to "get his head together a bit," while refusing to comment on a possible solo career, Cowell appeared Thursday night on The Late Late Show with James Corden.
There, he discussed the tumult within the group he shepherded to global stardom:
Asked where he was upon learning Malik had quit, Simon joked: "About to jump off a cliff." He's not once to mince words, that Mr. Cowell.
The musical mastermind then elaborated a bit more:
“I was in Miami. I kind of knew this was coming...
"We had a few conversations. He wasn’t happy."
"I was trying to say to him, ‘Look, I think you should stay around a bit a little longer’… And then something in him just said, ‘I’ve had enough.'"
Cowell said it was clear Zayn's mind was made up and there was no point in trying to change it.
“He was a bit stressed, and he needed some time off. So I had to respect his decision.”
We know what this meant for 1D fans across the land (see above), but what does it entail going forward for Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson?
Simon admitted they were "shocked" by Malik's decision, but he praised the four young men for how they have performed on tour without him.
Moreover, Cowell is convinced that the next One Direction album, which they group will complete this year, will be “the best record they’ve ever made."
We can't wait to hear it!
