Nina Dobrev is about to bolt The Vampire Diaries, but despite her politically correct statements, is her ex-boyfriend's romance with Nikki Reed to blame?
Conventional wisdom leads us to believe there's no way Nina Dobrev leaving The Vampire Diaries isn't at least partially caused by Ian Somerhalder.
After Dobrev landed the lead role as Elena Gilbert in 2009, the show exploded in popularity alongside her on- and off-screen romance with the hunk.
Elena and Damon Salvatore acquired an electric, rabid following, but the characters' romance (and show quality) fizzled with the actors' real-life love.
Nina insists the reason that she won't be back for Season 7 is to expand her career horizons, but insiders say the star is not being entirely truthful.
Ian went on to date Nikki Reed and get engaged after a whirlwind, PDA-heavy courtship, and that did not sit well with the girl he dated for years.
“The real reason she quit was because she couldn’t stand to see costar Ian with another woman," says an insider close to the fan-favorite actress.
“Nikki didn’t feel like she did anything wrong, but Nina did."
"She had confided about Ian to Nikki," who was their mutual friend and often hung out with both of them before he dated her, and "she felt used."
"Seeing them together made it not fun to come to work at all.”
Well, yeah. Watching some other girl get the engagement ring she must have at least thought about at some point has to be a tough pill to swallow.
The fact that she was also friends with the girl? Doubly hard.
Regardless of whether Nikki Reed is thrilled she quit, as has been previously reported, TVD is running on fumes these days, and she's jumping ship.
Next month's season finale will be bittersweet for fans as this chapter of the saga closes, but for Nina, it seems more bitter than sweet ... or is it the reverse?
