It all started when Scottish singer Caitlin McNeil posted a photo that her friend's mother had taken on Tumblr.
She expected a quick answer to an easy question: What color is this dress?
What she got was the sort of global phenomenon could only happen in the Age of Social Media.
McNeil likely never imagined that a simple debate over a mother-of-the-bride dress would result in a trending topic that was the subject over 11,000 tweets per minute at its peak.
We're guessing she never dreamed that celebs like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber would weigh in on the color controversy. And we're certain she never thought the unintentional optical illusion she posted online would bring her face-to-face with Ellen:
For reasons that remain unclear, Ellen gifted the Scots who started the debate with ten grand and a free trip to Grenada.
Well, sales of the dress have skyrocketed, so we guess...they deserve something? Maybe we just don't understand society anymore.
Anyway, the dress had already been confirmed as blue and black, but it helps those of us on Team White and Gold to see the woman at the heart of the controversy wearing it in lighting that wasn't created by the Devil to tear a nation apart.
So yes, the debate is over, and #TheDress is definitely blue and black. And the guy who got a tattoo off #TheDress is definitely an idiot.
