Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has checked into rehab.
It’s unclear why specifically he did so, but the band issued a statement saying he’ll be “seeking treatment for substance abuse,” following his epic on-stage rant in Las Vegas Friday night.
Believing Green Day was being cut off prematurely at the iHeartRadio Festival, Billie Joe exploded in an expletive-laden tirade, bashing Justin Bieber and smashing stuff (you gotta see it):
Armstrong’s bandmates said he was mistaken about the gig.
“Green Day would like everyone to know that their set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those they offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas,” the statement reads.
Billie Joe, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt will, in turn, be on shelf for while.
“The band regretfully must postpone some of their upcoming promotional appearances,” said the group, which is set to release its new album Uno tomorrow and launch a nationwide tour in November.
The album is their follow-up to 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown.
Earlier this month, Armstrong was hospitalized in Bologna, Italy, for an undisclosed ailment just before the band was to perform there. It’s unclear if that incident was related to substance abuse issues.
The band did not say what drove him to seek treatment.
We wish him the best and a speedy, complete recovery.
