Sure, his private bits are obscured by the water (we're guessing Zach did a few takes to make sure he didn't post anything that would get him flagged), but given his cultish army of adoring fans, we're guessing the actor's skinny-dipping selfie was appreciated nonetheless.

The actor, who's best known for his roles in Heroes and the Star Trek films has become an Internet favorite in recent years and uses his web presence to cultivate a closer relationship with fans.

Someday, the following list will not be necessary.

Someday, celebrities will not need to make any sort of official announcement regarding their sexuality because, quite simply, no one will care and society will be fully accepting of all orientations.

But that day hasn't arrived yet, for reasons explained so eloquently by Ellen Page when she came out as a lesbian on Friday:

Perhaps these stars can make a difference. Maybe they can positively influence others struggling with their sexual identity, using their public platform to push for tolerance.

So, with all that in mind, we join many in Hollywood in saluting Page and other famous folks who are very out and awfully proud:

Ellen Page made a major announcement in early 2014: She's gay. We applaud her for it.

Among other topics discussed by Quinto:

HE WANTS A FAMILY: "I definitely want kids. I want to share."

HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN OUT: "One of the defining conversations that I had with myself was that absolutely no good can come from me staying quiet about [my sexuality]. Literally, no good can come from it. But if I take the step to make the acknowledgment and be honest, so much good could potentially come from it."

HE'S HAD A ROCKY LOVE LIFE: "I found myself in a pattern of being attracted to people who were somehow unavailable, and what I realized was that I was protecting myself because I equated the idea of connection and love with trauma and death. I had to do a lot of work on the couch to really get to a place where I was able to show up to a relationship with someone who was actually capable of being in one — and that took a lot of trial and error."

"I'm just grateful to be able to participate in conversations more authentically now and to be able to stand up on behalf of people that aren't quite ready to stand up on their own and give them whatever shred of light or hope in a real sea of darkness," Quinto told E! News at the NYC premiere of Margin Call this week.

He added: "It's a gift that I've been given to pass forward, and it's an honor. And with honor comes responsibility and challenge, and I've just done what I can to face it every step of the way."

Coming off a performance on stage in Angels in America - playing a character who abandons his AIDS-stricken boyfriend - Quinto spoke to New York Magazine this week and said the off-Broadway play was "the most challenging thing I've ever done as an actor, and the most rewarding," adding:

"At the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there's still so much work to be done, and there's still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed."

Quinto will next be seen on the FX drama American Horror Story.
