Remember when MTV (music television) actually used to play music videos on TV? Yeah, we do too. Pour one out for the good ol' days...

After three years of airing 'round-the-clock music, MTV unleashed a phenomenon known as Video Music Awards upon the world in 1984.

The idea? To celebrate the artists that brought our favorite tunes to life on the small screen and intersperse said awards with live performances from those very artists.

That was probably where MTV went wrong. Or very, very right.

What happened after that first very crazy VMA show in 1984 when Madonna's "Like a Virgin" took on new life was that the ante was summarily upped.

Every musical act to come would need to bring their A-Game if they'd make headlines the next morning. Plenty of them, from Madge to Miley, managed to do just fine.

In honor of the 30th MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night, let's take a walk down memory lane to relive the 17 craziest moments in VMA history ...

Like a Virgin
Madonna didn't intend to writhe around on the stage during her 1984 performance of "Like a Virgin." She lost one of her shoes and the rest became history.

Taylor Swift's infamous "shut the f--k up" comment at the MTV Video Music Awards was not actually about Harry Styles, her friend Ed Sheeran says.

Taylor Swift VMA Cursing

Sheeran said in an interview that Swift's "STFU" remark, caught on camera as the One Direction singer was speaking, looked bad, but was not what you think.

It was not aimed at her ex, but at her best friend Selena Gomez, who said seconds earlier that she thought Miley Cyrus was going to win Best Pop Video.

In response to that comment, Sheeran says, Taylor Swift told her to "Shut the f--k up" as a means of saying Gomez will win the award (which she did).

Sheeran added that Swift came up to him after realizing this blew up online and explained what happened with Selena, noting that "I messed up."

So ... Taylor is not a vindictive ex, but rather a good friend?

Not as good for celebrity gossip, but better for society!

Forget Video of the Year or Best Collaboration.

Miley Cyrus won the unofficial trophy for Most Ridiculous at the MTV Video Music Awards last night, thanks to her stuffed bear and foam finger-based performance of "We Can't Stop."

And Taylor Swift clearly took home the title of Most Bitter Ex-Girlfriend, as cameras actually captured the singer turning to BFF Selena Gomez when ex-boyfriend Harry Styles was on stage with his bandmates and saying four simple words:

Shut. The. F-ck. Up.

Yes, it's clear Taylor has some pent up anger at Styles.

Perhaps she should write a song about it - which he says he's already anticipating. Watch the following GIF for to assess Swift's apparent response on repeat:

Two talented singers. Two different styles.

Before Taylor Swift's stage-diving VMA performance, she walked the red carpet in a sleek white J. Mendel pantsuit and classic red lips at the annual MTV gala.

Meanwhile, Alicia Keys rocked a one-shoulder, draped silver gown and asymmetrical 'do to boot before her collaboration with Nicki Minaj (and Gabby Douglas).

There's really no wrong answer with these two, but whose MTV Video Music Awards style do you like better? Cast your vote in THG's latest Fashion Face-Off!

It's official: Taylor Swift is funnier, cooler and a much better actress than Kim Kardashian.

The wildly popular singer anchors a new commercial for the MTV Video Music Awards, appearing opposite host Kevin Hart and poking fun at the fact that she writes so many songs about ex-boyfriends.

It's pretty funny and Swift is pretty terrific in it, which is a stark contrast to the wooden Kardashian and the lack of humor in her VMA ad from a couple weeks ago. Check it out now:

MTV viewers saw a new side to Taylor Swift at last night's Video Music Awards.

The singer went dark and serious for "Innocent," a song off her upcoming album, "Speak Now." Many believe it was written and performance as a response to Kanye West and the embarrassing incident that took place at last year's ceremony.

Check out the lyrics and rendition below and decide for yourself...

Sang Swift at the event:

"Lost your balance on the tight rope/it's never too late to get it back... Today is never too late to be brand new... Every one of us has messed up too. I hope you remember today's never too late...to be friends with you....You're still an innocent."

Taylor Swift Quotes

I think it's kind of fun to call out your ex-boyfriends. Like why do this if you're not gonna take the opportunity to always have the last word. It's so much fun.
