Remember when MTV (music television) actually used to play music videos on TV? Yeah, we do too. Pour one out for the good ol' days...

After three years of airing 'round-the-clock music, MTV unleashed a phenomenon known as Video Music Awards upon the world in 1984.

The idea? To celebrate the artists that brought our favorite tunes to life on the small screen and intersperse said awards with live performances from those very artists.

That was probably where MTV went wrong. Or very, very right.

What happened after that first very crazy VMA show in 1984 when Madonna's "Like a Virgin" took on new life was that the ante was summarily upped.

Every musical act to come would need to bring their A-Game if they'd make headlines the next morning. Plenty of them, from Madge to Miley, managed to do just fine.

In honor of the 30th MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night, let's take a walk down memory lane to relive the 17 craziest moments in VMA history ...

Like a Virgin
Madonna didn't intend to writhe around on the stage during her 1984 performance of "Like a Virgin." She lost one of her shoes and the rest became history.

First, there was Taylor Swift with "Shake It Off." Next came Nicki Minaj with "Anaconda."

And while the tracks don't sound the same, the videos have one thing in common: TWERKING!!!

Taylor Swift writes songs about her exes as frequently as some people change their underwear. Swift's "Shake It Off" is rumored to be about both former flames Jake Gyllenhaal AND Harry Styles.

Or it's just an anthem about rising above and shaking off the haters. Either way, that's Taylor's M.O., but she isn't the only scathing songwriter in the game.

She's joined by a veritable legion of singers and bands who've made it their great pleasure to respond to their critics, enemies, and exes via song.

I Knew You Were Trouble - Taylor Swift
Oh, Taylor Swift! You just can't NOT write songs about exes! "I Knew You Were Trouble" is very publicly about One Direction's Harry Styles.

And then there are the musicians whose songs aren't about heartbreak at all but are instead tributes meant to help a friend through a tough time.

Songs in which others also find solace, like "Fix You" by Coldplay, which Chris Martin wrote for Gwyneth Paltrow, and which brought comfort to many facing tough times.

We put together a playlist featuring 19 songs inspired by celebrities, some you know well and others you might not. Sit back, relax, and just push play!

Taylor Swift has sent a clear message with her new single: Eff the haters!

The singer released "Shake It Off" last night, a pop anthem that basically tells folks to shake off any kind of criticism, an appropriate message considering Earl Sweatshirt thinks Swift is being racist.

But Swift didn't concern herself with critics last night. Instead, she hosted a pizza party with fans!

If there's one thing Taylor Swift knows how to do it's give good GIF.

The girl can't stop - won't stop - dancing, leading to hilarity and entertainment for all of us in addition to her cheesy, catchy music that we hate to admit we actually enjoy.

Win-win! She's the GIF that keeps on giving.

Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" music video hit the Internet this week and further cemented our love for the country star - sorry, pop singer - and serial dater extraordinaire.

One who has, it's worth noting, currently been single for longer than ever in the entire time we've known her name. In any case, "Shake It Off" features T-Swift doing what she does best.

Dancing (terribly) like nobody's watching, she might just be poking fun at herself, but we're pretty sure she's also doing it to replenish the world's supply of Taylor Swift GIFs.

Check out the gallery above for no fewer than 27 examples from her latest music video masterpiece, and check out the official "Shake It Off" release below as well:

Taylor Swift has come out with a new song titled "Shake It Off."

In a Yahoo Live Stream chat yesterday, the singer explained this track as a sort of Eff You to the haters, saying she's learned not to grow “bitter” or “insane” over personal slights.

And now here comes Earl Sweatshirt to see if Swift really means that.

The rapper wrote on Twitter last night that Swift’s video (which partially features her dancing alongside Twerking women and breakdancers) is “inherently offensive and ultimately harmful.”

Sweatshirt noted that he hasn’t viewed the footage, but it’s clearly “perpetuating black stereotypes to the same demographic of white girls who hide their prejudice by proclaiming their love of the culture.”

Taylor Swift nearly brought down the Internet last night.

The artist hosted a special Yahoo live stream event in New York City, telling fans about her next album, a pop music-filled CD titled “1989” that Swift labeled as a “rebirth.”

The superstar labeled the 1980s as a “time of limitless potential,” adding that you could “be who you want, wear what you want [and] do what you want" during that decade, taking that theme and applying it to her latest music video.

It's for the track "Shake It Off," which will be included on "1989," and it features Swift taking on various personas, including what appears to be version of Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga.

See what we mean in these stills:

"Over the last few years I've learned a very important lesson," Swift said of the inspiration behind this single, explaining:

"We cannot control what people say about us but we can control how we react to it. We can let it get to us, make us bitter, even drive us insane or we can shake it off.”

We already know Taylor Swift is a little bit country.

Now, she's set to prove that she's also a little bit pop.

During a much-hyped Yahoo Live Stream today, the superstar said she will soon come out with her "very first, documented, official pop album." It will be titled "1989," the year Swift was born.

"The inspiration behind the record, I was listening to a lot of late-80s pop,” said Swift, noting the period “was a time of just limitless potential; wear what you want, be who you want, love who you want."

The album will feature 13 special polaroids, such as the one that graces the cover (above).
