Suri Cruise likely holds the key to divorce settlement talks between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, even if the six-year-old has no idea of this fact.

Lawyers for both sides are trying to work out a settlement that would avoid a costly, ugly, protracted and public court dispute between them.

Custody of young Suri could make or break that deal, as Tom insists any deal offers him "meaningful, significant contact with his daughter."

One source put it, "She is the primary concern in his life."

Katie filed for sole custody in June, reportedly prompted by fears that Tom's Scientology beliefs would become a central component of her life.

Tom's people have disputed this, albeit without really elaborating.

Regardless, Holmes' camp reportedly has assured Tom he will be able to spend time with his daughter when he finishes his new movie shoot.

Lawyers for both sides met for a full business day on Saturday, working on not just a temporary stopgap but a settlement for the divorce.

Attorneys are negotiating custody, visitation, support and property settlement, and while the tone has been "calm," things are still in flux.

In other words, a deal could get done, or talks could break down at any time. But for the moment, no one is rushing to the courtroom.

Tom Cruise is reportedly bitter at soon-to-be-ex Katie Holmes for not only blindsiding him with divorce papers last week, but for using their six-year-old daughter Suri as a weapon against him in the proceedings, according to reports.

The two are no longer on speaking terms as a result.

Although Tom now has "absolutely no contact with Katie," his people are negotiating with Katie's people over when and how Tom can talk to Suri Cruise, and Holmes' people are allegedly making that difficult for him.

The 50-year-old movie legend does speak with his daughter by phone at least once a day, TMZ sources say, but note that it hasn't been easy to get that.

When Tom does get Suri Cruise on the phone, he has not discussed the breakup of his marriage with his daughter. Nor does he know when he'll see her.

Things are "really bitter now" between Tom and Katie, people close to the situation say. He feels betrayed and thinks she is "using Suri as a weapon."

Whether she's being used as a weapon or not is subject to debate; fears over how she will be raised are legitimate, and are said to have prompted her to leave Tom.

You can bet that the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce will remain contentious if she continues to seek sole custody and limit his exposure to Suri.

Tom Cruise is reportedly gearing up for a fight.

Having been blindsided last week by his spouse, he is ready for a custody battle over Suri Cruise and preparing to counter-file for divorce in California.

According to celebrity gossip sources, Cruise wants to ensure that Katie doesn't get sole custody of Suri, which she asked for in her New York filing.

Cruise's camp says the divorce can only take place in New York if the marriage occurred there or the spouse has been living there continuously.

Despite the couple owning an N.Y. apartment deeded in her name, he will argue that both live in L.A. and she doesn't meet N.Y. residency requirements.

This is significant as N.Y. courts are perceived as much more likely to award sole custody in a contentious divorce than their California counterparts.

An insider added of Cruise's game plan: "There is absolutely no way that he is going to let Katie have sole custody. The lines are being drawn."

The catalyst for the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce appears to have been fear of their daughter being immersed in Scientology, according to reports.

Specifically, a Scientology organization known as Sea Organization (or Sea Org), where the religion is taught to kids as young as five, was the final straw.

Kids can be sent to live there without their parents to learn the highest levels of the belief system. Tom is said to be a huge supporter; Katie not so much.

Even before she filed for sole custody of Suri, Katie and Tom had been arguing over the little girl's indoctrination into Scientology. She's now six years old.

Sea Org has been often likened to a boot camp; ex-Scientology members have been outspoken against its military-like conditions on several occasions.

Members of Sea Org must sign "a one-billion-year pledge to symbolize their eternal commitment to the religion and it is still signed by all members today."

When Holmes and Cruise first hooked up in 2005, Jessica Feshbach, who had been with Sea Org since 1994, became her Scientology handler/chaperone.

In one of Katie's first interviews after getting together with Tom, Feshbach was described by a writer for W magazine as "cold-eyed" and "a third-wheel."

Katie, 33, reportedly felt the only way to save Suri from being shipped off to Sea Org was to file for divorce from Tom, 49, and seek sole legal custody.

The church denies, meanwhile, that the actress is being stalked by Scientology minions around NYC, a report that circulated over the weekend.

Suri Cruise turns six today. Six!

She's officially too old for our celebrity babies section, which we continue to use anyway, because we're lazy and don't get a lot of celebrity toddlers search queries.

Still, SIX!

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' only child (he has two adopted kids from his marriage to Nicole Kidman) Suri has been under a microscope since the day she was born and we thought she might not really exist. Ah, 2006 ... memories.

Anyway, enjoy some cute Suri Cruise pictures in honor of the special occasion, which also happens to be Kourtney Kardashian's birthday! Woo hoo!

Suri Cruise is by no means on auditioning for Toddlers & Tiaras.

She's far from the only star tot to don makeup, though, and you tend to see more of that sort of thing within celebrity culture than in the quote unquote real world.

Tarting up one's daughter during such tender years is not a crime or grave parenting error, it just seems a little unnecessary. Wouldn't you want to put that off?

Soon enough, they'll be acting and wanting to dress like adults. Why give them that push and hasten the end of whatever innocence they have left in life?

"They're very worried that Tom isn't letting Suri enjoy the childhood she deserves because of his Scientology beliefs," says an alleged inside source.

"As always, Suri won and didn't have to sit in her car seat."
