Rumors of a Suri Cruise body double being spotted all over New York City emerged last week in what is either a hilarious rumor ... or hilariously true.

The Daily News spotted Suri’s alleged double as recently as Friday afternoon, after her mom, actress Katie Holmes, picked her up from her school.

They were trailed, as always, by celebrity gossip photographers.

Mother and daughter hopped into a black SUV and headed down to TriBeCa for lunch, until the vehicle made an unexpected stop at a police precinct.

Out popped the doppelganger with the same coat as Suri Cruise, 6. And the same black leggings and Ugg-type tan boots with pink soles as Suri.

Tom Cruise's $50 million lawsuit against a tabloid is getting uglier by the day, as the media group who owns Life & Style is fighting back hard against him.

Cruise sued Bauer Media Group in October after L&S ran a story suggesting he “abandoned” daughter Suri Cruise after his split from Katie Holmes.

Now, both sides are gearing up for a court battle, and the celebrity gossip publisher is demanding a LONG list of information from the movie star.

Specifically, Bauer Media wants to legally establish “the extent to which Tom Cruise was in contact with Suri following his separation and divorce.”

Suri Cruise hasn't seen her famous dad in 48 days.

Has he ABANDONED her, as this tabloid claims??

In reality he's just working. Whether Tom Cruise has prioritized his movie career over his home life to the point where it's hurt his three marriages is an open question, but "abandoned" is a strong word, given how he provides for Suri.

There's also the fact that ... Katie Holmes left him.

If by "abandon" In Touch means shoot movies in London, Iceland, New Orleans and New York for the past six weeks, then yeah. Sure. Bit of a stretch though, no?

It's true that Tom hasn't been publicly seen with Suri Cruise in more than 48 days, since their vacation to Disney World on August 2, and yes, of course that's sad.

At the same time, many kids don't have two parents at all, and Tom and Katie Holmes, who has primary custody of Suri, have always tried to put their girl first.

By all accounts the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce was settled quickly, amicably and fairly for her benefit and each will continue to be involved in Suri's life.

Katie will be more so, but she has primary custody. This is just how some divorces work out; it's hard to call Tom an absentee father under the circumstances.

Katie Holmes apparently walked away nothing other than relatively modest child support in her divorce from Tom Cruise ... which is all she wanted.

From the onset, it was reported that Katie wanted nothing from Tom other than a divorce and for him to comfortably support their daughter Suri.

Mission accomplished on both fronts.

Sources familiar with documents filed with the court indicate that Katie received no lump sum payout in the couple's recent divorce settlement.

This is consistent with the prenup she signed which shuts her out of Tom's fortune. She also received nothing in the way of spousal support.

Tom has agreed to pay Katie $400,000 a year in child support, or $33,333.33, until Suri turns 18, coming in a shade under $5 million total.

He'll also cover her medical, dental, insurance, education, college and other costs, but for a man worth over $250 million, it's hardly an issue.

Also interesting: Suri Cruise cannot go to a "residential school" from now through her high school years ... i.e. no boarding school for her.

Katie could have fought for more support, but Suri brought them together even as they were divorcing and they opted to settle quickly.

The Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce doesn't mean they're not both loving and committed parents to their daughter, as the couple continues to show.

It was father-daughter bonding time as Tom took his adorable little girl Suri Cruise to the Magic Kingdom itself, Disney World in Orlando this week.

Tom and Katie's divorce, which was settled out of court before any kind of nasty legal war could break up, promises him "meaningful and significant contact" with six-year-old Suri Cruise despite her living with her mom.

Insiders say Cruise has wrapped his latest film and will be spending a lot more time with Suri in the near future. He's reportedly taking her to Chelsea Piers later today for a gymnastics lesson.

A source tells TMZ that Tom picked Suri up, spending five minutes in his old apartment, but ex-wife Katie Holmes was NOT on the premises.

No word yet on if these two plan a face-to-face meeting, but a friend describes Cruise as "sad but not bitter" over the divorce.

Through stealth activity, which included the use of burner cell phones, Katie Holmes plotted her divorce from Tom Cruise in secret and came out unscathed in the court of public opinion.

Now, similarly, the actress has left the scene of a car accident without any significant injuries.

Multiple outlets confirm that Holmes and six-year old daughter Suri were hit by a garbage truck last night while driving in the star's Mercedes. No one was hurt, but a police report has been filed.

"Suri was crying in the car," says a People Magazine insider, who adds that Holmes was not driving the vehicle.

Strangely enough, the crash marked the second time in four days that Holmes and Suri have been involved in an accident. Last Friday, a member of the paparazzi hit their car as they were arriving home after a trip to FAO Schwarz.

The terms remain confidential, but Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes agreed that Suri will live primarily with her mother with "generous visitation" by her dad.

"They both love their daughter," says one source, and while he wants to be a big part of her life, forever, "Tom thinks she should be with her mother."

The superstar also "didn't want his family dragged through the mud," says the source. "Neither one of them wanted this to be hashed out in public."
