Who knew she had it in her her?!?

Skylar Laine, a young southern gal best known to American Idol fans so far on season 11 for her energy and lively personality on stage, simply stood at the microphone last night and belted out a beautiful version of Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings."

It was the sort of rendition we'd have expected from Jessica Sanchez, but Skylar proved her versatility with it, causing us to agree with Jennifer Lopez, who was on the verge of tears by the time Laine completed the cover and told her:

You "can sing with the best of them here." Amen, J. Lo. Amen.

When is predictability a good thing? When it comes from Skylar Laine.

Faced with the challenge of selecting songs from their personal idols on American Idol this week, it wasn't hard to forecast that Laine would choose a track from Miranda Lambert. She's likely the contemporary artist with whom most viewers would compare Laine.

And Skylar did not disappoint on "Gunpowder and Lead," bringing her rocking country girl persona to the appropriate levels. She doesn't possess the same kind of voice as someone like Jessica Sanchez, but Laine owns the stage every time she steps on it, don't you agree?

Skylar Laine left the rocker side of her personality at home last night.

This American Idol contestant covered the Billy Joel single "Shameless" and really embraced her country twang on the track, starting slow and picking up the pace to eventually finish with one of the more authentic performances of the evening.

Steven and Randy both noted a few pitch problems, but we didn't notice any. Do you?

Watch the rendition above and then compare it to a pair of other strong female auditions from this week: Jessica Sanchez's "Everybody Has a Dream" and Elise Testone' "Vienna."

With the American Idol top 10 taking the stage again tonight, and with this shaping up to be one of the more hotly-contested seasons to date, it's time for the first THG Power Poll of the season.

Who do you see as the favorite right now?

American Idol Top 10

10. Deandre Brackensick: Would have been our choice to leave after last week's debacle. He can hit the high notes... and that's about it.

9. Heejun Han: Love the personality, don't see anything on stage that makes him standout above the rest. It's solid and nothing more or less.

8. Elise Testone: Might suffer some likability issues. Did you notice her NOT applauding for Erika last week? Or not hugging Skylar? Yes, we're forced to nitpick when the talent is this even. We did love her version of "Let's Stay Together."

7. Joshua Ledet: We expect plenty of disagreement here. It's not a question of his voice, just of his theatrics. Ledet's "When a Man Loves a Woman" may have been the single best of any contestant this season, but we can see his act growing old.

6. Skylar Laine: She has the energy and the attitude, that's for sure. She also has the identity: a rocking country chick. She just lacks the range.

Skylar Laine has one clear advantage on season 11 of American Idol: this young finalist knows exactly who she is and exactly what kind of artist she wants to be.

A country rocker at heart, Skyler took on Bonnie Raitt's "Love Sneaking Up on You" last night, despite Jimmy Iovine telling her in the days leading up to the show that it wasn't the right song choice.

But Laine chose wisely, belting out a fun version and receiving praise across the board from the judges, especially Jennifer Lopez, who told the hopeful she "killed" it and Steven Tyler, who said quite simply: "I haven’t heard you sing a song bad yet."

Might Skylar be sneaking up on voters as a legitimate contender?

Skylar Laine says she's actually never sung a Whitney Houston song before.

With "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," she may have done the late icon justice.

To be sure, Skylar Laineis no Whitney Houston ... or even Jessica Sanchez.

However, American Idol often rewards the underdog who strays out of his or her genre and picks up unfamiliar or challenging material quickly.

She doesn't sound like Whitney, but Skylar is who she is, and that's formidable - a country girl who has proved she can sing anything. Take a listen:

Let's continue with our face off of American Idol finalists, shall we?

With the final 13 named last week and all contestants performing live for your vote on Wednesday, we've been pairing off men and women against each other in order to determine the season 11 favorites. Deandre Brackensick, for example, is currently a more popular finalist than Joshua Ledet, according to THG readers.

Now we're back to the fairer gender, specifically two contrasting crooners: Shannon Magrane and Skylar Laine. The former was compared to Lauryn Hill during her semifinal rendition, while the latter rocked out to some country.
