Shelley Malil has been sentenced to life in prison.

The actor, who was found guilty in September of trying to murder his ex-girlfriend, will be eligible for parole in 12 years. At yesterday's hearing, he told the judge: "I want to do whatever I need to do to make sure I make right from the wrong that I did."

Malil's victim, Kendra Beebe, was stabbed over 20 times. Her injuries included a punctured lung, along with cuts to her back, chest, arms and neck.

In his defense, the 40 Year-Old Virgin star claimed he became disoriented after arriving at Beebe's home and finding her with another man. He said he wielded his knife against an attacker he believed was trying to harm him.

The jury did not buy this story.

Turns out, there are much worse things in life than being a 40-year old virgin. Just ask Shelley Malil.

The actor, best known for his role in that Steve Carell comedy, has been convicted of attempted murder. Last week, Malil took to the stand and admitted that he stabbed girlfriend Kendra Beebe multiple times in August 2008, but claimed it was an act of self-defense and he was unaware she was the victim.

The jury didn't buy the story.

Among other injuries, Beebe was left with a collapsed lung and chin lacerations. She testified that Malil grew angry after the pair fought earlier in the ay and only ceased his attack when a neighbor came upon him during the incident.

The panel of five women and seven men found Malil guilty of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He could be sentenced to life in prison when a judge makes his/her ruling on a later date.

On August 10, 2008, actor Shelley Malil stabbed his girlfriend multiple times. These facts are not in dispute.

But The 40-Year Old Virgin star testified at his trial today and said the grisly incident was an accident, a fatal case of a major misunderstanding.

"I'm sorry," Malil said on the stand. "I had no idea. I saw the pictures [of the stab wounds] for the first time, I was stunned. When I look at those pictures, I still can't believe the knife I was holding was responsible for all those injuries."

Malil says he went to girlfriend Kendra Beebe's house on the night in question and had "no intention of killing anybody or hurting anybody."

Explaining the evening in murky details, the actor said he walked into the home and saw Kendra drinking wine with another man, David Maldonado. Malil felt threatened and grabbed a knife, despite the admitted fact that Maldonado did not possess any weapons.

According to TMZ, the woman who actor Shelley Malil allegedly stabbed, Kendra Beebe was the victim of three life threatening stabs (out of more than 202 total); one to each lung and one to the throat.

Authorities report Beebe nearly bled to death, as there was "a lot of blood" on the back patio, across the kitchen and all the way to the front patio.

Moreover, a male visitor initially disarmed Malil... but he found another knife. A neighbor then showed up and disarmed Malil for the second time. At last, The 40-Year Old Virgin star supposedly fled once he heard sirens.

Atorneys say Kendra's children were upstairs at the time of the attack. It's gruesome stuff.

In the acting world, Shelley Malil is best known for uttering a few humorous The 40-Year Old Virgin quotes.

But there's nothing funny about the reason why Malil is now in the news.
