Scotty McCreery is growing accustomed to finishing in first place.

The talented young country crooner did so on American Idol in May, of course, and now he's done so again on the Billboard Top 200. McCreery's debut album, "Clear as Day," sold 197,000 copies in its first week out, according to Nielsen SoundScan, placing it atop that chart.

"My head is just spinning," Scotty says. "It started out kind of low: They said 100,000 maybe. Then every day I saw the numbers climbing. It's wild: It wasn't a year ago that I was a normal cat, and now I'm number one on Billboard. It's insane, it really is."

McCreery is the first Idol champion to hit number-one with his initial release since Ruben Studdard in 2003.

Lauren Alaina, meanwhile, released her first effort this week and will try to match Scotty's total.

It's a great time to be Scotty McCreery.

The American Idol champion releases his debut album ("Clear as Day") in a week and has also just announced that he'll tour with country superstar Brad Paisley in 2012!

Cities, dates and other details will soon be released, but Scotty has Tweeted how “it’s really humbling that somebody like him would invite me to tour w/ him," adding: “I just hope i’m ready for any pranks he throws my way.”

Since he was crowned the season 10 winner in May, McCreery's exclusive Wal-Mart CD has sold 185,000 copies, and his first single, “I Love You This Big,” reached number 15 on Billboard‘s Country Songs chart. Far from shabby for the young artist.

The impressive start to Scotty McCreery's career has now reached historic proportions.

The new American Idol champion's first single, "I Love You This Big," is now the highest-charting debut for a new country artist in 20 years.

The track shot to number-one on iTunes and number-three on Billboard's Digital Songs chart; while his compilation CD peaked at number-three on the country chart.

In response, Scotty - who will head to Nashville next week and start recording his first album - released the following statement:

"I am humbled and shocked by this news. I can't tell you what it means to me to be on the same charts as my musical heroes. I want to thank my fans and especially country radio for their support.

"I continue to be amazed by everything that has happened to me in such a short time.

"This is such a special song to me, so I am thrilled that it is getting such a great reception at country radio. What I love about 'I Love You This Big' is that it can mean different things to different people.  It could be about the relationship between a couple in love or a parent and child."

Scotty McCreery is off to a solid start at the latest American Idol champion.

A compilation of studio performances by the country crooner has been downloaded 23,000 since the season 10 finale, landing Scotty at number-12 on the Billboard chart.

How does this compare with other famous Idols?

Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze moved only moved 2,000 downloads in the same time frame, while Kris Allen settled at 10,000. His season's runner-up, Adam Lambert, sold 16,000.

As for Lauren Alaina? She also outperformed Kris and Lee with her digital set: it debuted at #42 on sales of 11,000.

In the wake of Scotty McCreery's American Idol triumph, the country is asking multiple questions today?

  1. Did he deserve to win? It's debatable.
  2. Are Lauren and Scotty dating? No.
  3. Did Lee DeWyze snub the show last night? Sort of.

Typically, the previous winner ends up on the stage to congratulate the new champ and hand him/her a trophy. But DeWyze was seated in the fifth row at the finale, and Ryan Seacrest never even mentioned his name.

What happened?

  • The 10th American Idol
  • Ninth Idol

According to producer Nigel Lythgoe, DeWyze refused to be a good sport. The producer Tweeted today: "I was so upset Lee DeWyze wouldn't present the winners trophy to Scotty. Especially as he's been on the show this Season. I guess he was shy."
